Namakkal,Thiruchengode etc and the districts around Erode are the hotspots in the state for schools. They come into limelight during the month of May,when the results of the public examinations are announced.Almost all the private schools we know are strict to make sure a student scores well.To what extreme they go?Are they too strict?Pressurize the students?Punish them severely if they don’t perform? If so,there can be a lot of adverse consequences. If one has an advantage,it carries a disadvantage too.
PRABHU,CLASS IV
All the students in the school were staring at the rusty volley ball post onto which a heavy Iron plate and an 8 inch iron rod were tied.As soon as the bell rang, students rushed out of the classes screaming.Few students of the CLASS IV,Sec A did not hurry unlike others. They walked silently following Prabhu and as they came near him,one among them jumped in air, raised his hand and gave a blow on Prabhu’s back and shouted ‘Nikkal’ and all of them laughed out loud.He fell on the ground with his chest hitting on a small sharp stone. He slowly managed to get up and sat on the ground trying to get some balance.Seeing him sit, another kid from the group gave a blow on his back again shouting “Kundhal”.
Nikkal-Kundhal is a popular game among the.The rule is simple. One who wishes to play the game with others has to join initially by connecting his right little finger with the other guys’ and say ‘Nikkal’.From then on,whenever he stands or gets up,he has to say ‘Nikkal’ to his partner, and whenever he sits down,he has to say ‘Kundhal. This applies to the other person too.If one fails to say the code, they are entitled to get a hit on their back from the partner. If you have signed up for the game with multiple people, and if you have to sit in front of all of them,it’s enough if you say “All boys Kundhal/Nikkal”.A foul hit results in a penalty. He will hit you back.If you decide to stop playing this and sign out,you can do by connecting your little finger with his’ just like you signed up and say ‘Release’.
Prabhu slowly got up and walked back home crying throughout.
“What happened son? Why are you crying?” asked his mom,not much concerned since this was usual.
“They hit me again mom” he said and lied on her lap.
“Ok ok relax. Why don’t you complain about it to the teachers?”
“They are not bothered”
“Ok don’t worry.I will speak to the class tea…” and before she could complete, she smelled something. It was the smell of gas from the cylinder. She got up immediately and ran towards the kitchen. She switched off the stove and went to the bed room.
“Ayoo Ayoo Ayooo, ungalala enaku nimmadhi eh illa..Why the hell you go inside the kitchen? Don’t you have your mouth to ask if you need something?” She shouted at her husband.
“Hey stop shouting like a vampire.I just made some coffee for myself” the husband shouted back.
“Why don’t you ask me? Does it affect your prestige?”
“Not my prestige, but my stomach. When have you made a coffee good enough for my tongue?”
“Look,I can only make with what I know, and if you still need a better coffee,go to any of the hotels nearby but don’t ever mark your footprint in the kitchen“,and she continued “I don’t sit idle here.Even I work and apart from that I have to run behind our son to make him go to school, have to cook for all of us and need to remind you every day to take your mobile phone when you leave.A normal human being cannot do beyond this, understand? “.
“My fate” concluded the husband and left the house to relieve some stress.
Prabhu slept on the sofa despite the cold war at home, since that was not something new to him.He woke up after an hour or so and went outside the house and saw his mom speaking to a lady of similar age as his mom,at a far distance.
“Momm” he shouted waving his hands and asking her to come home.
“I will come,go inside” shouted his mom and continued speaking to her friend.
Prabhu had this habit of speaking alone. All of his feelings were shared to an imaginary friend he hallucinated whenever he felt lonely.Hallucination is common for the people of Kollimalai.Ghosts, spirits wander around the place just like any nomads.‘Psychiatrist’ is a term that is yet to be added in their dictionary even today. All psychiatric problems were believed to be caused by either evil or good spirits, and only the temple priests handle these issues.
After a while of loneliness,he came back inside his room, opened his bag and took out his report card.He was staring at the red line underlined on the mark he secured in Tamil. While he was wondering on how to tell this to his mom,the door suddenly opened and his dad came in with wobbling legs unable to stand or to walk steadily. After a lot of struggle,he managed to sit on a chair and stretched his legs to relax and took a nap. Then,he slowly opened his eyes and saw his son staring at a card.
“Hey,what’s that?” he asked Prabhu,
“Nothing”
“Come on show it”
“Quarterly exams report card” he said and gave it to his dad.
He strained a lot to get a clear vision of the report card.Shook his head many times to get a good focus and finally saw the red line under 19.
“You failed in Tamil?” his dad asked still looking at the report just to be sure if he was really steady.
“Yes” said Prabhu in a very weak tone.
“How could you fail in Tamil being it your mother tongue?” asked his ‘tongue’.The son remained silent and refrained from answering as he felt the question was inconsiderate.
“Hello” said his dad nudging Prabhu with his toe,“Am asking you,Reply”.
“It was tough, leave it” he said in a tone which meant not to ask any more questions and bother him.
“How come others passed then? Say ‘I did not study well’ and don’t give lame reasons.” He said and lifted his son to stand next to him, holding his hand.
“Okay fine” said Prabhu in a distressed tone and tried to get rid of his dad’s hand on him. This made his dad so angry that he dragged his son to the bathroom and locked the door and switched off the lights inside.
“How dare you answer me like that,Stay inside throughout the night” and came back and fell on his bed and slept.
Prabhu cried “Please dad,Please” loud inside the bathroom and repeated those words for more than 15 minutes. But all went in vain as his dad was not conscious enough to hear him.Later he stopped crying and remained silent inside for a while.
“Please help me.Why nobody tries to understand me?” he asked NONE,or to be exact,he asked his FRIEND who would be with him when he was lonely. He yearned for a shoulder to cry,a lap to sleep and a heart to care. After lots of cry and deep thoughts on his situation,he gradually slept inside the bathroom.
“Hey,wake up” she tried to wake her husband.
“Wake up” she hit him on his hand and asked “Where is Prabhu?” He slowly opened his eyes and as he tried slowly to get up,he again lost his balance and fell on the bed.Knowing that he was drunk she scolded him and tried to wake him up by hitting him hard.Since she couldn’t,she decided to pour a mug of water on him and thus stepped inside the bathroom.Switching on the lights, gave her the biggest shock.
“Oh dear Prabhu, get up son” she fumbled and tried to wake him up,but he did not react a bit. After so much of shakes,he got up slowly and cried the instant he saw his mom.The mother got so angry that she took the bucket from the bathroom and came out to hit her husband so hard. The beatings were little severe that the husband got his conscious and the balance back and sat on the bed.
“What kind of a human are you? Is this the way you treat your son? Drunkard Animal! You forgot to switch off the gas that day and almost killed me.I should have switched on the lighter that day so that I would have died happily.Kill both of us and be happy” said the mom with intense pain and started weeping.Prabhu heard all the words of his mom and felt a little happy that there is at least someone to care for him.
“Hey stop whining.Your son failed in Tamil and hid the report card from us.I do care for him.If I don’t scold him,he won’t come up in life.Don’t I have the right to worry about his studies?” said the dad trying to get some excuse for his fault.Prabhu was shocked to hear those words from his dad.He wanted to tell and cry to his mom that he needs a huge support from her,but he couldn’t.
“Stop your nonsense. It’s the whisky that is speaking now and thus I don’t want to talk to you anymore.Go,drink more and die” she shouted and took her son to the next room and shut the door and made him sleep that night. But the darkness in the bathroom haunted Prabhu for a longtime. The fear he had was immeasurable. He considered Darkness as a Satan that was waiting to take his life. From that day,he started to sleep as early as he could and remained at home after evening to avoid any kind of interaction with Dark.
Prabhu went to the school next day with high thoughts on concentrating more on academics, especially Tamil. It was not that easy to score well on this subject for him, that too when someone like Kumarasamy handles the subject.Students studying even in 11th and 12th standard walk or talk very cautiously, when he is around.
M.KUMARASAMY,M.A Tamil
Mr.M.Kumarasamy,M.A in Tamil literature is very much known in the district for his strictness. He knows how to inculcate fear in a student. He was chucked out of a private matriculation school for beating up a student so hard that he couldn’t lift his hand for a week.Bribe, his caste, and his experience paved way to get a job in the government school. The principal of the school thought that when his interaction with the higher secondary students increases, there would be a greater chance for dispute to occur inside the campus. So the Tamil teacher was made to attend only from classes IV to IX.
“I think I have announced earlier that the students who fail in the exam do not have the privilege to sit in my class until their parents meet me personally. So,can the special ones please stand up so that I could start the class?”
One by one slowly started to get up after the announcement.
“Get up” shouted Kumarasamy that the failed students got up in a split second.
“Alright” he said and turned towards the board to start his class on Thirukkural. He wrote:
“PIRARKINNA MURPAGAL SEIIEN THAMAKINNA
PIRPAGAL THAMAI VARUM“
He then turned back to the class and recited the Thirukkural slowly and told the students to repeat after him so that they get the pronunciation right. Then he asked those students who were standing to recite it again so that they learn them well.He always wanted his students to be PERFECT and not ALMOST PERFECT.
“Let’s go word by word to understand the words thoroughly.‘Pirar’ means others,‘Inna’ means bad things or trouble,‘thamak’ means ‘self’.So the first line means when you do bad things to others, say you hurt them by any means,‘Thamakinna Pirpagal Thamai Varum’.‘MURPAGAL’ and ‘PIRPAGAL’ denotes the time.Though the actual meaning for them is ‘Forenoon’ and ‘Afternoon’,the context referred here is more general. It states that the bad thing will come back and affect you automatically. So never hurt or do bad things to others “and continued to repeat the explanation so that the students understand them completely. He was disturbed by a murmur from the middle row.
He saw Prabhu arguing with the boys sitting just behind him.
“Prabhu!” he shouted.
“Sirr...” Prabhu turned back immediately and bent down to avoid eye contact with him.
“Look up.What’s going on there?”
“Sir..Sir..” hesitated Prabhu. He was not sure whether to complain about those guys to him or to ignore because he was very much aware that either of them is going to be punished severely.Though they troubled Prabhu a lot,he still was little concerned in getting them punished.Complaining about the guys would not only result in punishment for them, but also that he would be encountered with more troubles from them as REVENGE.All these thoughts mixed up in his head and when he heard a scream
“Prabhu, what’s going on there?” he replied as
“Sir,I asked for a pencil” and bent his head down again.
“What’s the need for a pencil when I am taking the class here?”
Prabhu remained silent.
“Explain this now” he said pointing to the board.
“PI-RAR-KI..PI-RAR-KINNNAAA MUR-PA-GAL SEI-IEEN ..THA-MAKKU..MAKKU” fumbled Prabhu.
“Don’t say your name; we all know you are ‘MAKKU’.Recite what’s written on the board” he said and the whole class started to laugh.
“Everybody, that’s enough! You struggle a lot even to read it,how are you going to explain the meaning?!”
Prabhu remained silent.
“What’s your next class?” he asked the student in the 1st bench.
“P.T period Sir” replied the girl.
“Very well” he said and continued the class without having any word with Prabhu.
As soon as the Tamil class got over, everybody started running out of the class to the ground.P.T period occurs just once a week and so the students get excited for this hour.Guys would play ‘LAHORI’,‘GOLI’ or to the maximum, they play ‘CRICKET’ with bat and ball self made.Girls on the other hand, would sit and talk or play ‘Wood-Cutter’ or ‘Blind-fold’.The Games room was being used just as a store room or to dump unwanted hardware tools and materials like PVC pipes, rusty rods etc.It also contained very old and rusted Javelin, torn volley ball, broken benches, desks, chairs etc.
Just when Prabhu was about to leave the class,Kumarasamy asked him to stay. When all others left,he took him to the Games room and locked him inside the room, switched off the lights and left the place without saying anything.
THE TRAUMA
The Satan started to frighten Prabhu once again. The windows were also closed that there was not even a photon travelling inside the room.He shouted for a while but there was no response. He decided to bang the doors so that someone might come for help.He took one step at a time and he got hurt with every step as the place was so messy. After every step,he took some time to take the next step. This slow process increased the fear inside him.The fear was severe. He was not sure if the Tamil teacher would open the door ever.Hallucination began and he asked his imaginary friend for help.Silence, darkness, the Tamil teacher and all terrible things created a TRAUMA.Death looked so near to him. With the entire TRAUMA,he took the next step perfectly on the wrong place. The old shot put took its toll on his leg and made him fall.
After half an hour,Kumarasamy opened the door and switched on the lights. He saw Prabhu lying down on the floor.
“Hey Prabhu” he called. There was no response and so he called him again and again. Not an inch he moved. He then went near him and shook and turned his body. His jaws dropped as he saw the blood drooping down from his neck and head which had its stain in his shirt collar too.He quickly retaliated and went a few steps back. The ever sturdy and tough man panicked a lot and started to shiver and sweat.Even without checking the pulse of Prabhu,he quickly came out of the room. There was no one in the corridor. He closed the door gently without locking it and stood outside the room and wondered what to do next.He heard a sound similar to footsteps and so he hurried back to the staff room wiping his sweat and the little blood stain in his finger. As he was walking back the school peon wished him “Good afternoon” and walked past him.He ignored him and headed towards the staff room. All of a sudden,he stopped, turned back and called the peon.
“Arumugam” he called him.
“Yes sir” replied Arumugam.
“My wooden chair’s leg is shaking a bit.I need a hammer to fix the nail in it.Can you get me one?”
“I think the hammer is in the play ground. Some carpentry work is going on there.I will get it back from them in the evening and fix your chair” said the peon.
“Oh..Okay..Fine” he said and remained silent.
“Okay Sir..I have work and I will see you in the evening” said the peon and started to leave.
“What about the Games room? There might be a hammer inside right? If not a hammer, there will be some iron rod for sure.I think that would be sufficient for the nails.”
“Hmm okay Sir..I will check that after sometime and will see what I can do”
“No it’s okay.Just get me something from that room and leave.I will fix the chair by myself.I don’t want to disturb you.You might be having a lot of work”
“Not at all. It’s my pleasure to help you.Come, let us check that right away” smiled the peon on the teacher’s pleasing words.
“Okay fine. And why is the carpentry work being carried out in school hours.Don’t you know that the students will be playing in the ground? What if someone gets hurt?” he said as both walked heading towards the games room.
“You are right Sir,but it is the management’s decision. The Principal has no concern for students.” Said the peon and smiled at the teacher and his good heart.
As he opened the door he saw Prabhu lying on the floor surrounded by his own blood. The peon screamed on shock.Kumarasamy asked the peon to check Prabhu’s pulse. He slowly went and took his hand to check for pulse.
“Sir,he’s dead” he frowned.
“Okay, lift him.Let’s take him to the hospital.I will take the Principal’s car and also inform everyone.
As the news spread, the whole school gathered near the games room. The peon tied a cloth around his neck and head to stop the bloodshed.Kumarasamy took the car and took him to a hospital along with the peon and the Principal.Few masters followed the car in their own vehicle to the hospital.
The doctors declared that he passed away way before the time they found him dead.Prabhu’s parents also reached the hospital and were crying out loud and accusing the school for its unsafe environment. The school teachers were enquiring the peon on what happened and he told them that he was not sure on what happened but based on what he saw it looks like he has entered the Games room to pick something to play and would have accidentally fallen on the sharp tools which cut his neck and the big desks upon which he might have hit his head.Kumarasamy was standing near the peon leaning against a pillar with fear and guilt feeling.
“Arumugam, but the Games room is locked only at the top of the door right? Am sure Prabhu is not tall enough to reach the top of the door to unlock it.I think someone might have unlocked the door” said one of the Masters.
“Yes Sir.Even when I and Kumarasamy Sir opened the door,it was not locked.”
Kumarasamy frightened a bit as he heard the masters speaking like CID officers trying to solve the case and find out the culprit.
“I know who unlocked the door” said Kumarasamy. All turned towards him in surprise.
“Who?” asked one of the Masters.
“It’s the carpenters who were working on the ground. They might have gone inside to take some tools for their work. Those irresponsible people would have not locked the door. Now this is the consequence of a careless mistake” shouted Kumarasamy to sound so responsible.
The masters also went in the flow of Kumarasamy as they had huge respect on him and did not think twice on what he said. They readily accepted his claim and the whole group started to accuse Principal for letting the carpenters work during the school hours.
Prabhu’s parents also believed the accusation and pointed at Principal and abused him.The police arrived at the hospital and the Masters explained the entire story to the cops.Kumarasamy stayed away from speaking to the cops as he wished not to let any suspicion on him.The principal tried hard to console Prabhu’s parents that it was an accident and that the school would miss such a good student like Prabhu so that they will at least stop shouting.Meanwhile the doctors requested everyone to have all the quarrels outside the hospital as it would be disturbing them as well as the patients. So as a result the Principal moved to a private place with the cops along with the Peon and Kumarasamy, distant enough from others.
The School was temporarily closed for a while and resumed the classes later.Kumarasamy did not have a proper sleep since that day.All his strictness disappeared and the maximum punishment he ever gave to the students was to make them stand in class.Every morning he had the habit of reading the newspaper that was published next day after Prabhu’s misery. It read
“Class IV student died breaking his head by accidentally falling down inside the School Premise”
He had to keep that paper safely because he cannot read them in any paper that was published after that.He did not have the heart to tear it apart as it reminded him of his guilt every time he saw that.He did not move on from that easily. He went to many temples and pilgrimage expecting mental peace, which he often got. Many sleepless nights surpassed. On one such night he started hearing weird whistle sounds. He woke up and looked around but couldn’t find anything. He then got down and peeped at his window and found nothing. He started to focus his ears and now he was able to hear only the fan’s friction sound. He had no clue on what was that and so he again came back to his bed next to his wife.Even if he fell asleep at a rare moment something would hit that it would immediately wake him up.The wife had no issues and slept properly.
As the sun came up he went down and fell asleep early in the morning. When his wife tried to wake him up he told her that he would not be able to go to school and asked her to call up the Principal and inform him. From then on,he was not able to sleep at night and would sleep either in classroom by giving some assignments to the students or he would sleep in the staff cabin, right on his chair when he did not have any class to attend. This carried on for few days, including the weird sound at every night.
After attending a marriage reception Kumarasamy came back home at around 9 30 PM and sat on the sofa in the hall to relax and took deep breaths to have a calm mind so that he could get some sleep at night. His wife came and sat next to him and started talking.
“I went to meet Prabhu’s parents today afternoon, just to know how they are feeling now”
“They are not completely alright. His mom cried a lot.She feels so guilty that she did not take care of him properly and this the price for being bad parents”
This again made Kumarasamy feel guilty and it was enough to ruin yet another night’s sleep.
“They feel his presence all over the room it seems. She is so weak that she cried throughout. She is keeping his clothes, toys, books etc safely to remember him forever.I feel so sad for them and I too cried when I went there.”
Shattered by his wife’s words,he felt so bad for the kid.He did not kill the kid directly. He thought maybe he was not to be blamed for his death. He did not push him down or cut his neck.It was more of an accident. But he also felt the other way.May be he was the reason. What’s wrong if a kid fail in a simple exam? Should he be punished for that? Everyone is not born with a same intelligence. Some grasp fast, some take time. Some understand what we say easily. Some needs to be taught in a way that suits them. One cannot throw seeds in a field and pour the same amount of water and fertilizers and expect that plant to grow even and exactly similar with one another.
He again started to take deep breaths to relax his mind, and while doing so,he saw a strange object on the table to his right. There was a small remote controlled car which kids would play with.Perplexed by the presence of it he asked what that was.She said
“The neighbor lady came to our house in the morning with her kid and that the kid might have left it here”
“Oh okay”
He was convinced with that somehow and went to the bedroom for sleep. But as usual his sleep was deprived. He started hearing weird sounds, but today it was something new,a new sound, quite far from his room.He got up from his bed and concentrated on the sound to trace its origin. He realized that it was coming from the other side of the door.He opened the door and entered the hall and was surprised to see the yellow remote controlled car running forward, hitting one of the legs of the table, coming back in reverse direction, and again moved forward to hit on the leg again. This was going on in a loop.He went forward, took the car in his hand and flipped the switch to turn it off.
The house was silent as a graveyard. He went back to his room and lied on the bed and closed his eyes to sleep.Just before he could actually sleep,he heard another sound. The sound was loud and clear this time, the sound of someone knocking his bed room door.Horrified by the sound he laid on the bed perplexed on whether he had closed the main door properly. He wondered if he should step down and open the door to check that.He checked on his wife but she lay deeply asleep and not a bit of response she gave.He closed his eyes tightly and hoped that the sound should disappear, but it didn’t.Realizing that he had no choice,he got down from the bed and took step by step and reached the door.By the time he reached, the knocking sound stopped.Back to the graveyard silence.Assuming that things were fine,he took one step back.Just as he kept his foot one step back, there was a single knock in sync with his foot.He remained in that position for some time as there were no knocks after that. Then he kept his other foot also one step back and just like the previous instance,a synching knock was made.Frustrated with the events going on,he hastily opened the door and as soon as he opened, the remote car went through his legs in a jiffy and he screamed so much and closed the door again. The car went real fast and hit the wall on the opposite side and stopped. The wife woke up immediately and screamed which frightened him even more that he screamed once again seeing his wife.
“What happened to you? Why are you screaming at the middle of the night? Gone mad or what?”
“Hey,look there” he said pointing to the wall with a broken voice.
“What’s there?” she asked turning towards the wall.
“The car”
“Ok the car.So?”
“You didn’t hear anything?”
“The scream of you could be the only thing one could hear in our whole street. What’s the matter with you?”
“Heyyyyy…”
“Whaaaat?”
“Nothing” he said and slowly came near his wife and sat on the bed and stayed silent for a while.
“I am afraid” he said and looked his wife.
“I am afraid something bad might happen to us,I mean to me.”
“Nothing like that.Go to the Ayyanar temple nearby and pray to him.He will save us from any sorts of trouble.Things will be fine.”
“I wish” he said and looked at the car.
“The first thing that you do tomorrow morning would be to get rid of that car.Give back to them.”
“Hmmm okay, now sleep” she said and lied back on the bed.Kumarasamy envied her nature of sleeping as soon as she lied at the bed and her unconsciousness of all the sounds, events etc that happened around her.
He was in deep thoughts of Prabhu and decided that he should meet a Priest next day and tell his problem and confess to him.Next day,as soon as he woke up,he searched the entire house for the remote car and found that it was missing. He enquired about that to his wife and she said that she went to their home to return it and since it was locked, she kept it in their shoe stand and came back.Consoled by that,he went all the way to meet the head priest and confessed everything to him along with the chain of events that happened till that day after Prabhu’s death.
“This is a complicated issue.I can’t judge whether you are guilty are not,but I can assure you that the child’s soul is wandering around you” said the priest.
“The spirits are of 2 kinds, good and evil, and the latter ones are termed GHOSTS.So you are not bothered by a ghost and thus it’s not going to affect you physically.”
“Oh,thank god”,Kumarasamy gave a small contented smile.
“But”
“What but?” Tell me please.
“There must be a reason for the child’s soul to come to you. It’s not revenge though.”
“So what must be the reason? Can you please ask the child to speak to me? I am even ready to apologize to the child by falling on his feet.I want peace.I am not able to sleep right after his death.”
“Relax, that’s not going to work and that’s not what he wants.”
“So what does he want?”
“That depends. It’s a little child. So it’s not easy to predict. When we cannot determine what a child wants when he is alive, how can we say when it’s dead?” Kumarasamy was terrified and felt really worried. He started to feel the fear, the TRAUMA which the child would have experienced.
“Don’t worry; it won’t cause any damage to your life.He will take care of everything. He knows better than anyone else” said the priest pointing his finger upwards.
“I will come to your home day on the next full moon day,and do a special Pooja so that you won’t have any more troubles.”
“That would be great, thank you so much” said Kumarasamy, and gave the consultation fees and fell on his feet to get his blessings. The priest stood up right away and lifted him up.
“Go home.Things will be fine”.
The assistant to the priest, who was watching the conversation throughout came to the priest and asked
“Swamiji,I guess you forgot to give him the Prasad”
“I wish the kid do not cause any damage to him” he replied.
“What? But you said a kid cannot cause it”
“Of course it cannot. But the kid need not be the only spirit in his house.”
“Who else could be with him? Why would some other spirit do it for him?”
“Prabhu might not have a good friend or a well wisher in our world. He might have got a few in his world.Lucky kid I should say” he chuckled.
“Is that possible, for someone to take revenge using others?”
“Why not! Ellam inga irundhu ponavanga daana?” winked the priest.“They do have rules, but remember that they also have POWER.With Power, the rules can be easily broken,as it happens here”
Kumarasamy came back with a little bit of hope, after the conversation with the priest. He went back home exhausted. His wife was preparing dinner for him.
“You look so dull. What happened?” he asked her.
“No nothing.”
He kept his hand on her face, and then on the neck.
“You take rest,I will help myself.”
“Hmmm Okay” she said and left the dining. As she left,Kumarasamy opened the whisky he bought while coming back home, mixed with soda and had 5 larges continuously in order to have a proper sleep. He ate the rice she prepared. He turned to ‘SUN MUSIC’ channel to hear some pleasant songs before going to sleep.Within few minutes of the song, the cable went off.He switched off the TV and went to his bed and fell on it.
Hours passed and a smell, the smell of LPG gas swooped through his nose.He slowly got up and went to the kitchen and switched it off and came to his bed.
Few more hours passed and he was deep asleep. The wife put her hand on him and caressed his arm.He did not respond. She tried to wake him up and shook him with her hand on his chest. He then murmured in a typical drunkard’s voice and tone:
“Hey,not well na,so sleep today. We will see that later”.She again shook him hard and when he didn’t wake up,she hit him hard on his face.He woke up with a sudden reflex and when he rubbed his eyes and sat on the bed,he saw her standing near the bedroom door.
“What happened?” he asked and went near her.He kept his hand on her shoulder and turned her to face him. With bloated eyes and arrogant face, she turned his body,so that his back faces her and gave a big blow on his back screaming ‘NIKKAL’.Shocked to see her in that way along with the pain of the hit,he fell down and lied motionless. She jumped in air and gave another blow on his back and shouted ‘KUNDHAL’.He was then dragged and pushed to the door.He screamed in fear and tried to get up to run.As he came out,the same yellow remote control car rushed in between his legs into the bedroom. The TV suddenly turned on and an item song was playing at a very high volume.Even on that hyper tension he was undergoing and sweat all over his body,he still sensed the smell of LPG gas again. He realized that the kid’s spirit is all over again but perplexed on the position of it as it played all over the house. When he closed the door to lock his wife inside the room,he was hit by another spirit from the back and the remote car went all around the house. He was then dragged back to the kitchen. While one held him tight so that he couldn’t move, the remote car came and stopped in front of him.A broken piece of chalk, which lied on the floor, floated in air.He tried to shout, but he couldn’t.His throat was blocked. The Chalk went on to the wall and it wrote in a childish handwriting:
“PIRARKINNA MURPAGAL SEIIEN THAMAKINNA
PIRPAGAL THAMAI VARUM “
Tears came down from Kumarasamy’s eyes as well as his heart, after probably a very long time that one could account that as the very first time.As the tears rolled over his face to the neck, his throat block got released and he was set free.He fell on his knees and cried out loud. The remote car slowly moved out of the kitchen. He slowly picked the little chalk and held it close to his heart and cried again.Few moments later, the match box from the shelf fell down near the stove and the box slowly got opened.Kumarasamy fumbled on the floor and tried to reach the stove as well as the match box to avoid the causality. As he got up and tried to go near to it,he was caught by someone from the back that he couldn’t move further. The match stick made a strike thrice, but it was not lit. Before it made the fourth strike, when Kumarasamy was crying out loud,he was thrown out of the room and seconds later, the room exploded.
The neighbors rushed into the spot immediately as it was a high intense noise. They searched for the couple all over the place. The wife lied in the bathroom, unconscious.Men rescued her.Several men worked on the exploded spot for more than half an hour and meanwhile the ambulance arrived.Kumarasamy was found lying under a wall upon him and the couples were taken to the hospital.
News spread around the town as Kumarasamy was drunk that night that he might have missed to switch off the stove, and that a spark in the electric circuit has caused the explosion.Kumarasamy escaped the narrow death with burns all over his body and his wife just suffered minor injuries. The cops arrived and Kumarasamy spoke with them in private and confessed about Prabhu’s death and said he is willing to accept any legal punishment. The incident spread throughout the state. The mob protested against the teacher and asked the court to issue death sentence. The human rights on the other hand stood against capital punishment. The judge,Dharma Rajan, studied the case,Kumarasamy and chain of events along with the other advocates.A childless and now homeless couple, highly injured husband, mentally weak wife, the teacher was already fired from the school and was completely banned from teaching profession, the judge felt he could not be anymore punished. He declared him not guilty of Prabhu’s death, but was ordered to pay a compensation of all his Provident Fund to Prabhu’s parents.However,50% of his salary would be paid to him as Pension to make their livelihood. The court concluded the hearing by enforcing a law that the teacher or any school authority holds no right to beat a child and those who violated would be severely punished. The court also issued notices to the district collectors to check on the sanitary and security conditions of all the schools.
The priest came to Kumarasamy’s home along with his assistant a month later and performed a special Pooja in his home.
“All the spirits that tortured you is now no more. You are free now.Do good,be good”
“So all these were a game by God?”
“No.Karma” he said and handed over the Prasad to him.He fell on the priest’s legs and got his blessings.
“Dint I tell you ‘HE’ knows what to do? Well, it was KARMA.That’s the one which rules the world.Take care”
